Danish Cabinetmaker
Freestanding Wedge / Plinth-Base Daybed System
Birch, Coconut coir, Steel, Cotton, Velvet
Manufactured by Slagelse Møbelværk, Denmark, 1940s
This sofa in eclectic Bohemian style consists of rigid internal birch frame, Inside the wood frame sits a network of coiled steel springs or heavy-gauge zig-zag (no-sag) steel wires.
The metal springs are covered with a thick layer of rubberized coconut coir (coconut fibres bound with natural latex) This protects the soft foam layer above from being chewed up by the moving steel springs; a layer of no treat cotton coated with velvet.
This is a convertible sofa, currently pushed flat against a wall to help brace those back cushions, or is it freestanding in the middle of the room.
Instead of a traditional sofa, This design allowed the user to instantly transform the piece from a deep lounge sofa into an open, flat sleeping mattress just by lifting the back cushions away.
