Italian Neo Renaissance
Savonarola Chair
Walnut, Silk Velvet, Embroidery, Metal
From an Unknown Cabinetmaker, Italy, c. 1900
It consists of a carved walnut structure coated with red silk velvet, backseat ornamented with embroidery, fixed with large bronze nails.
While the basic design was simple and practical, ornate versions with intricate carvings, armrests, and lavish upholstery also emerged during the Renaissance, this revival or Neo Renaissance is entirely velvet coated.
The name was not used during the 15th century but was coined in the 19th century. It was likely popularized due to the discovery of chairs in Savonarola's former cell at the Convent of San Marco in Florence.
This chair has been acquired in the late early 20th century by an art teacher in Venice, and kept in the family until present.
Chair good condition overall, the left armrest embroidery has been renewed.
