Axel Salto Glazed Ceramic Bowl, Royal Copenhagen, circa 1940

A magnificent and exceptional glazed ceramic bowl. Signed, Royal Copenhagen edition. Denmark, ca. 1940. H:17 cm W40 cm, AXEL SALTO (1889-1961).

Axel Salto is one of the masters of Danish design, although his principles of creativity have often run counter to the functionalist aesthetics of his contemporaries. successors. His work was greatly respected and his works purchased while he was at the peak of his career, for the collection of the Museum of Industrial Art in Copenhagen. Trained at the Academy of Arts in Copenhagen, he has evolved his style from heavy and dark woodcuts to painting and ceramics. He painted all his life, illustrated several books of poetry and children's stories, designed textiles L.F. Foght and was, in 1917, one of the founders of the magazine Klingen. It is however his sensual and unique approach to ceramics that propelled his career on the international scene. The first works of Salto are largely inspired by classical languages and Greek mythology, his student specialization, as well as visual motifs of Art Deco and religious iconography, especially demonic. Later, his works took more organic forms such as pods, budding flowers or fruits, for their fertile energy and appearance. Salto's approach was "to create in harmony with nature, rather than copying the outside." Salto, who created motifs in relief on the surface of his works, could also use his decorations to convey the different enameling techniques. He first worked for Bing & Grondahl from 1923 to 1929, then for the Royal Copenhagen, where he developed especially for his works several enamels and colors then unknown to the Danish palette, such as turquoise. Salto kept his studio, first for his paintings, but also for his collaborations with other artists such as Carl Halier.

Strombershyttan Blue-Silver Crystal vase

Retangular blue-silver heavy blow crystal vase with rouded corners. Sweden circa 1940s

Signed Strombershyttan on bottom, in excellent condition, just few scratches on bottom.

H: 15cm x W:10cm x D7cm

Lindfors Glassworks was founded in 1876 and changed its name to Strombergshyttan in 1933, when Edward Stromberg, former head of Orrefors took over the the company.

He and his son, Eric, created a process to make glass with a bluish-silver color, which became the dominant characteristic of Strombergshyttan. Gerda and Asta Stromberg designed many of the pieces, along with Rune Strand and Gunnar Nylund. The Stromberg family sold the company to Orrefors in 1976 and it was closed in 1979. Although most Strombergshyttan glass is signed with a production code, the designer is never noted on the glass.
